Yanesen

Lanes the fires spared, named by a magazine its own residents made.

A name covering Yanaka, Nezu and Sendagi; it is not an administrative district. The area came through both the Great Kanto Earthquake and the 1945 air raids without large-scale burning, so the wooden houses, the temples and the narrow lanes are still here. The name itself was coined in 1984 by a local quarterly magazine.

Yanaka Ginza Shopping Street

A shopping street about 170 metres end to end, with tofu makers, croquette shops and handmade goods side by side; many people eat what they buy on the spot. The stone steps at the entrance are called Yuyake Dandan, and from the top you look down the length of the street.

Weekend afternoons are crowded; between three and five on a weekday is the easier stretch. The steps face west, so on a clear evening the sun comes straight at you.

Yanaka Cemetery

A cemetery spread across the high ground of Yanaka. In spring people gather under the cherry avenue that runs through it. Tokugawa Yoshinobu, the last shogun, is buried here, along with writers and politicians of the Meiji era.

The central avenue is open to the public at all hours — a serene early-morning stroll before the neighborhood wakes up is hard to beat.

Nezu Shrine

Legend puts its founding some 1,900 years ago; the buildings you see went up in 1706 under the fifth shogun, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, and seven of them — main hall, worship hall, gate — are National Important Cultural Properties. A line of vermillion torii climbs to the small Otome Inari shrine in the grounds: nowhere near the scale of Kyoto's Fushimi Inari, but quiet enough to linger over. April's Bunkyo Azalea Festival brings out some 3,000 azaleas across roughly 100 varieties.

Entry to the grounds is free. The azalea garden charges an offering only during the azalea festival, usually 1 to 30 April, and the amount changes from day to day, so read the notice on the day. Early on a weekday there are few people and you can take your time.

Yuyake Dandan Sunset View

The 36-step stone staircase at the east end of Yanaka Ginza — the Nippori side — is called Yuyake Dandan, 'Sunset Stairs', because on clear evenings the low western sun silhouettes rooftops and power lines in classic shitamachi style. The name was coined in 1990, when the steps were rebuilt, by Mayumi Mori of the local magazine Yanesen. No ticket, no guide: walk up Gotenzaka from Nippori Station's west exit and it opens out in front of you.

The Cats of Yanaka

Yanaka's cats live on temple walls and in the shade of the cemetery. Whether you meet one depends on the day, and they keep to no fixed spot. Signs in some places forbid feeding them, so look but leave them alone.

The cemetery is a public through-route. Early morning and late afternoon have fewer people about, and the cats are moving then too.

Kayaba Coffee

A coffee house opened in 1938, closed, then taken on and reopened by people from the neighbourhood. It serves an egg sandwich on thick-cut toast, and hand-dripped coffee.

Queues form early on weekends. Arrive right at opening (8 AM) or after 2 PM for the shortest wait. Credit cards and transit IC cards are accepted.

Cafe Nekoemon

A café on Sansaki-zaka slope, run as the sister shop of Yanakado, the maneki-neko (beckoning cat) specialist next door. Over coffee and cake you paint your own lucky cat — the most hands-on stop in the neighbourhood Tokyoites call 'cat town'.

Closed Mondays; open 11 AM–6 PM. Painting seats are limited, so it is worth checking ahead. The Yanakado shop right next door sells the finished cats if you would rather just browse.

HAGISO

Originally a condemned wooden apartment building from the 1950s saved by art students who held a farewell exhibition — and the exhibition was so popular it became permanent. Now a micro arts complex with a gallery, café, and architecture studio under one roof, HAGISO is the creative heart of the neighborhood.

Even with no exhibition on, the building itself is the thing to look at. The cafe is part of it and you can simply walk in.

Echigoya Sake Shop

A liquor shop on Yanaka Ginza, in business since 1904. The shelves run to sake, proper shochu and wine, and there is a standing-bar corner — the 'Echigoya standing-drink division' — where you can open what you just bought, or take a draft beer, on the spot. Shoppers drift in off the street; it functions as the neighbourhood's watering hole.

Closed Tuesdays; open 11 AM–8 PM. The standing bar does not run every day, so check the website or call if that is the point of your visit.

The Memory of This Town

The Neighbourhood That Had No Name

Yanesen is not on any map as an administrative district. The word is a contraction — Yanaka, Nezu, Sendagi — and it did not exist before 1984. That autumn, a group of women living in these streets, raising children at the time, started a quarterly magazine about the three neighbourhoods because, as they put it, they wanted to read something that nobody was publishing. They ran it out of their own pockets. The handmade quality of it turned out to be the appeal: it found readers, it went into the black, and it became the template that local magazines across Japan copied.

It ran for twenty-five years and ninety-four issues, ending in the summer of 2009. By then its abbreviated title had escaped the cover and become the name of the place. Visitors now say Yanesen without knowing they are quoting a magazine. One of the founders, Mori Mayumi, also gave the district its most photographed object its name: when the stone stairway down to the Yanaka Ginza shopping street was rebuilt in 1990 and the ward asked the public for a nickname, hers was chosen — Yūyake Dandan, the sunset steps.

There was something here to write about because the war largely passed over it. Yanaka was bombed on 4 March 1945 — a hundred and thirteen people were killed and more than two hundred buildings destroyed — but when the great firebombing came six days later, the belt running from Ueno Park through Nezu and Yanaka came through it. The cemetery sits on high ground with little to burn and worked as a firebreak; people sheltered there. The result is a temple quarter of more than sixty temples that survived at a scale nothing else in Tokyo did. The old streets you walk here are not a coincidence, and neither is the fact that you know what to call them.

The magazine was called Chiiki Zasshi Yanaka, Nezu, Sendagi. Issue 94, August 2009, was the last.

A family-run inn in the middle of Yanaka, open since 1949. It began taking overseas guests in 1982 and has hosted travellers from close to a hundred countries since. Tatami rooms, two reservable private baths — one cypress, one ceramic — and hosts who hand you a hand-drawn neighbourhood map on arrival.

Seventeen rooms, all tatami, in Yanaka 3-chome — one of the closest places to sleep to Sendagi Station, and walkable from Nippori too. Nothing flashy about it; the value is in futon-on-tatami and stepping straight out into the back lanes in the morning. Popular with independent travellers from abroad.

The avenue running through the cemetery is lined with cherry trees, and people come to sit under them. It is also a public through-route, so in the morning the commuting bicycles and the blossom viewers share the same road.

Nezu Shrine

The azalea garden holds some 3,000 plants of about 100 varieties, and this is the only time it is open. The varieties come out at different times, so they are rarely all in flower together.

The festival of the tutelary shrine of Yanaka and Nippori. Every third year is the full festival, when the main shrine is carried; in the other years the neighbourhood shrines go out together.

Said to have been founded in 1714 by Tokugawa Ienobu, the sixth shogun, and sometimes counted among Edo's three great festivals. Nezu and Sendagi are the shrine's parish, and each of the old districts sends out its own mikoshi or float.

Getting There

There is no station called Yanesen. The nearest are Nippori on the JR Yamanote and Keisei lines, and Sendagi and Nezu on the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line; how far you walk depends on which you start from. For Yanaka Cemetery and Yanaka Ginza, use Nippori; for Nezu Shrine, Nezu or Sendagi is closer. Times and fares are in the table below. The area is walkable, but there are gentle slopes and cobbles, so wear something comfortable.

Best Time to Visit

Late March to early April for cherry blossoms in Yanaka Cemetery; April for the Bunkyo Azalea Festival at Nezu Shrine (usually April 1–30, peaking around mid-month); October to November for autumn foliage. Summer is warm and humid but the shaded lanes and temple grounds offer relief. Weekday mornings are the least crowded at any time of year.

Local Tip

Yanesen has no major department store, no chain convenience store on every corner, and no rush — that's the point. Carry some cash since many small shops and the ryokan do not accept cards. If you see a cat, let it approach you rather than chasing it; the locals will appreciate your manners more than you know.
