Akihabara
The shrine that gave it its name moved away; electronics and anime moved in.
It began as the electrical district, and the anime, manga and game shops have since layered on top of it. Behind the big chain stores are dealers in doujinshi; beside a stall of junk components stands someone touting a maid cafe. Chuo-dori closes to traffic on Sunday afternoons.

One of the big otaku department stores of Akihabara, with manga, toys and doujinshi divided by floor. Among them is a corner selling animation cels and hand-drawn key frames from the 1980s and 90s — not reproductions, but the sheets that went through the camera, with price tags on them.
Cel and production-art prices vary widely by title and condition; looking up rough market rates before you go makes it much easier to judge whether a piece is a good deal.

Most visitors miss the gentle uphill path from Akihabara's back streets that leads directly to Kanda Myojin, a shrine that is the spiritual patron of Akihabara's tech and otaku culture. Early morning visits before 8:00 AM are extraordinarily peaceful.

There is no Akiba shrine in Akihabara. The shrine the district is named for now stands about three kilometres away, in Matsugaya. The story starts with a fire in December of the second year of Meiji — January 1870 by the Western calendar. The burnt ground was cleared and kept clear as a firebreak, a hiyokechi, so that the next fire would have somewhere to stop. In October of the following year, by imperial command, three fire-quelling deities were brought here from Momijiyama inside the palace grounds, and a shrine called Chinka-sha was built. But in Edo the god you prayed to against fire was Akiba Gongen, and people assumed that was who had been enshrined. The mistake stuck. The open lot became known as Akiba-no-hara, Akiba’s field.
The shrine moved because the railway arrived. In 1888 the land was taken for the line the Nippon Railway was extending down from Ueno, and Chinka-sha was relocated to Shitaya Irichō. On the ground it left, a goods station opened on 1 November 1890 — some fifteen thousand tsubo of it, built to connect the trains to the boat traffic on the Kanda river. In 1928 the Kanda produce market, wrecked in the Great Kantō Earthquake, moved in as well, and vegetables and fruit took over the site. For a firebreak, this land was rarely empty for long.
In 1945 it burned again, and again it filled with stalls. Students from the electrical engineering school bought parts in the black market, assembled them into radios and sold them; it worked, and traders in electrical components gathered around them. The clearance order of 1949 pushed the stalls off the streets, and the places built to house them were the Radio Center under the elevated tracks, the Radio Kaikan and the Radio Department Store by the station. The produce market closed in 1989 and moved to Ōta the year after; the 2.7 hectares that opened up west of the tracks were built over in time as well. Ground kept empty so that fire would have nowhere to go has been filling up with something ever since. The only thing that never came back is the shrine.

Kanda Myojin
The full festival runs every second year, in the years of the ox, rabbit, snake, sheep, rooster and boar. The shrine's parish reaches from Kanda through Nihonbashi, Otemachi and Marunouchi — 108 neighbourhood associations — and on the day of the mikoshi entry more than two hundred portable shrines climb the hill towards Myojin. In the off years there are only the ordinary rites, so check the year before planning around it.

Akihabara is served by five lines from three operators: the JR Yamanote, Keihin-Tohoku and Chuo-Sobu local lines, the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line and the Tsukuba Express. The Sobu local runs through from Shinjuku, but taking the Chuo rapid to Ochanomizu and changing there is quicker. Times and fares are in the table below. The Tsukuba Express platforms are in a separate building, so allow a few minutes to change.
Weekday afternoons (Tuesday through Friday, 2:00 PM–6:00 PM) offer the best balance of open shops and manageable crowds. Weekends draw large crowds, especially on Sunday when Chuo-dori is closed to traffic and becomes a pedestrian street. Late summer and winter holiday seasons coincide with major anime and game release events.
Prices on figures and merchandise vary significantly between shops within the same block — it is worth checking two or three stores before purchasing. Many smaller shops accept only cash. If you are buying electronics to use overseas, always confirm the voltage compatibility and warranty terms before purchasing, as most Japanese electronics are designed for 100V.
In 1868 a fire-quelling shrine was set up in this much-burned quarter. People called it Akiba-sama, and the cleared ground around it Akiba-no-hara — the field of Akiba. That became the name of the station. The shrine itself was moved in 1888 to make way for the railway.
