Daimyo estates, the Imperial Army, the US military: a night town that keeps changing hands.
Roppongi has the Mori Art Museum on the 53rd floor of Mori Tower and the National Art Center, Tokyo, which has no permanent collection on display; at night its clubs and bars come to life. The name means "six trees", but whether it refers to six great pines or to the residences of six feudal families whose names contain the character for "tree" has never been settled. The land passed from feudal residences to the Imperial Army and then to the US military, and the US military's Akasaka Press Center (about 31,670 square metres) has still not been returned.
Perched on the 53rd floor of Mori Tower, this world-class contemporary art museum offers both boundary-pushing exhibitions and a breathtaking 360-degree view of Tokyo from the adjacent Tokyo City View observation deck.
Buy a combo ticket that includes both the museum and the observation deck. The night view of Tokyo from the deck is genuinely one of the best in the city.
Japan's largest exhibition space, designed by architect Kisho Kurokawa, features a stunning wave-shaped glass facade. It hosts major rotating exhibitions rather than a permanent collection, so there is almost always something fresh to see.
The building itself is free to enter. Head to the in-house brasserie 『Paul Bocuse』 on the third floor for an affordable French lunch with a view of the undulating interior atrium.
Designed by Tadao Ando and located inside Tokyo Midtown, this sleek underground gallery focuses on design in everyday life. Exhibitions here are consistently thoughtful and tend to attract a creative local crowd.
The sculpture garden surrounding the building is free and beautifully landscaped — worth a slow walk even if you skip the exhibition.
The garden behind Midtown, on the site of Hinoki-yashiki, the Choshu domain's Mori family villa. In the evening people who work nearby sit here with a can. The trees are tall and the place never gets bright.
Between five and six on a weekday, people finishing work take the benches in turn. The amount of noise is not what it is inside the Midtown buildings.
A 12-minute walk from Roppongi Station (and steps from Nogizaka Station), this solemn shrine honours General Maresuke Nogi, who took his own life in 1912 following Emperor Meiji's death. Next door stands the Western-style house he and his wife lived in, together with its brick stable — both designated cultural properties of Minato City, and almost entirely overlooked by visitors.
The interior of the former Nogi residence opens to the public only a few times a year (including around 12–13 September, the anniversary of his death); the rest of the year you can look inside through the windows. The antique flea market once held on the grounds has been suspended since before 2026.
Azabu-juban, the next district over from Roppongi: a covered shopping street where the people who live in Roppongi actually buy their food and eat. Tofu makers over a century old, rice-cracker shops, long-established soba houses — the signs are in Japanese only.
Naniwaya Sohonten, founded in 1909, is named as one of the places taiyaki began. There is a queue, but it moves reasonably fast.
This dramatic multi-story izakaya is said to have inspired the restaurant set in the film 『Kill Bill』. The yakitori, soba, and sake selection are genuinely solid, and the theatrical interior is worth experiencing at least once.
Book in advance online — walk-ins at peak hours face a long wait. The robata grilled items are the highlight of the menu.
The basement and third-floor dining areas of Tokyo Midtown house a curated selection of serious restaurants, from high-end Japanese kaiseki to French bistros. The quality-to-accessibility ratio is excellent for a complex of this scale.
Lunch sets at most restaurants here are roughly half the price of dinner menus and offer nearly the same quality — a great way to eat well without breaking the budget.
Several long-running tofu shops on the Azabu-Juban shopping street still make their tofu by hand every morning. You buy it alongside the neighbourhood's everyday shoppers — silken tofu and soy milk that bear no resemblance to the supermarket version.
Azabu Yoshinoya, in business since 1948, and Kameya Tofu are both still working. What you buy was made that morning.
This ground has changed hands more than once. In the Edo period it held the secondary residences of daimyo. After the Restoration the army moved in and infantry regiments were stationed here. When the army disappeared with the defeat, the Americans requisitioned it. Roppongi as a night district comes after that: there was a base, there were foreigners, there were bars for them, and in time the bars became the destination.
Most of the requisitioned land was returned, and is now Midtown, or parks, or embassies. Not all of it. In Roppongi 7-chome, a parcel of 31,670 square metres — the Akasaka Press Center, better known as Hardy Barracks — is still a US Army facility. It holds the offices of Stars and Stripes, lodging, and a heliport.
The heliport is in use. When senior American officials visit Japan, this is where they move from. Minato Ward, citing noise and the risk of an accident, keeps petitioning the national government, Tokyo and the United States for its early return. A helicopter passes now and then over the heads of people shopping in Midtown. Why Roppongi's nightlife is here at all is explained better by that sound than by anything else.
The zelkova-lined street running down from Roppongi Hills is lit each year from early November to late February with the blue-and-white "SNOW & BLUE" LEDs, switched on 5 PM to 11 PM. Weekends are packed, but on weekday nights the 400-metre avenue is nearly empty and looks like snow settled on the branches.

Located inside Roppongi Hills complex, the Grand Hyatt is the benchmark luxury hotel in the neighborhood. Rooms are spacious by Tokyo standards, the pool and spa are excellent, and the location puts you steps from Mori Art Museum.

Augthe closing weekend
Azabu-juban-odori, Patio Juban and Ajiro Park
A shopping-street festival that began in 1966. From three in the afternoon to nine the main street is closed to traffic, with stalls and a stage. Around three hundred thousand people come, so if you walk over from the Roppongi side you will at some point simply be moving with the crowd.
Dates shift from year to year. Check the shrine or organiser before you plan around one.
Times are for a typical daytime weekday and fares are ordinary tickets, rounded. Both change — check a route planner on the day.
Roppongi is served by the Hibiya subway line and the Toei Oedo line. There is no through service from Shibuya on the Hibiya line — Shibuya is not a Hibiya line station — so the practical route is the JR Yamanote or Saikyo line to Ebisu, then two stops on the Hibiya. From Shinjuku the Oedo line runs direct, about four stops.
Roppongi works year-round but has two distinct peaks worth targeting. November to February brings the Keyaki-zaka illuminations and crisp clear days ideal for the observation deck. Late spring (April to May) fills the Tokyo Midtown gardens and Hinokicho Park with greenery. Summer weekends can feel overwhelming in the nightlife district — avoid if crowds bother you.
The Hibiya line platform at Roppongi sits deep underground, so allow time for changes and for reaching the exits. Last trains run somewhere between midnight and one on weekdays; after that it is taxis. Bars in Roppongi commonly add a table charge on top of what you order — an ordinary local practice. The amount varies from bar to bar, so read the sign at the door or ask before you sit down.
The name means six trees, though which trees is unsettled. One account says six great pines stood here; another that six daimyo households whose names carried the character for tree — Uesugi, Kutsuki, Takagi, Aoki, Katagiri and Hitotsuyanagi — had residences on the spot. Neither has been proved.
