Shops for fashion and music gather around the scramble crossing. The station has been under redevelopment for years, and the passages and exits change from one year to the next. One street back from the main roads, Hyakkendana, laid out in the 1920s, and Nonbei Yokocho, from the postwar years, are still there as they were.
Every time the lights change, pedestrians step off from all directions at once. To look down on it there is the second floor of the Starbucks facing the crossing, or Shibuya Sky, the observation deck at Shibuya Scramble Square.
Friday and Saturday after eight in the evening are the busiest. On a wet day the umbrellas all go up at once, which looks quite different.
Spanning the 45th and 46th floors and the roof of Shibuya Scramble Square, this observation complex — whose SKY STAGE deck is fully open-air — offers a 360-degree panorama of Tokyo including Mount Fuji on clear days. The glass-floored edge walk and the illuminated cityscape at dusk are genuinely breathtaking.
Book tickets online in advance as same-day tickets often sell out. Aim for the one-hour window before sunset so you can see both the golden hour and the city lights.
The bronze statue of the loyal Akita dog Hachiko stands just outside Shibuya Station's Hachiko Exit and is one of Tokyo's most beloved meeting spots. The story of Hachiko waiting for his deceased owner every day for nearly a decade has moved hearts worldwide.
The statue gets extremely crowded during daytime. Visit early morning around 7 AM for a peaceful photo without the crowds, and you will often find local salarypeople quietly paying their respects.
Turn off part way up Dogenzaka and you find Shibuya Hyakkendana, a hillside shopping quarter laid out in the last years of Taisho after the Great Kanto Earthquake. It backs onto the love-hotel district, and along the slope stand bars with a few counter seats, yakiton places, and Meikyoku Kissa Lion, open since 1926.
Lion is open straight through, 11:00 to 22:30, and plays classical records at volume — conversation is kept to a whisper. Plenty of places on this slope are cash only, so bring some.
Built along the Shibuya River as part of the Shibuya Stream redevelopment, this promenade runs about 600 metres from Inarihashi, past Namikibashi, to the Shibuya Bridge complex. Foreign visitors almost never find it, yet it is a standing lunchtime escape for office workers who bring a bento and sit by the water.
The Shibuya-end entrance is Inarihashi Plaza. At 600 metres it takes only about ten minutes end to end, and Daikanyama Station is a short walk on from Shibuya Bridge.
One stop from Shibuya (or a longish walk), this architecturally stunning bookstore-lifestyle complex feels like the antithesis of Shibuya's chaos. Anjin, the lounge lined with 30,000 vintage magazines, is open 11:00–22:00, and the curated book and music floors draw Tokyo's intellectuals and design professionals.
Ichiran's solo-booth dining concept — where each customer sits in a private cubicle and customizes their tonkotsu ramen via a paper order form — is a quintessential Tokyo food experience. The Shibuya branch on Spain-zaka slope is one of the most accessible for first-time visitors.
The queue moves faster than it looks. The order slip lets you dial in noodle firmness, broth richness, garlic and the strength of the secret sauce, and English slips are available.
Tucked inside the refurbished Miyashita Park complex, this retro-themed alley gathers over a dozen small stalls representing regional Japanese cuisines — from Hokkaido crab to Okinawan mozuku. The lantern-lit corridor recreates the mood of a postwar food market.
Arrive before 6 PM to snag a seat at the more popular stalls. The kushiyaki (skewer) counter near the entrance has a rotating local craft beer selection that pairs perfectly with the smoky grill aromas.
A standing sushi chain near Shibuya Station. You stand at the counter and order piece by piece. The tuna cuts are the strong point.
Go at opening time (around 11 AM) for the freshest selections before the lunchtime rush depletes the premium cuts. Standing at the counter is part of the experience.
A seafood izakaya on the Maruyamacho slope, closer to Shinsen Station than to the Shibuya crossing. The owner-chef sources the fish himself and chalks up whatever came in that day, so the sashimi platter often features species you will not see in tourist-facing sushi restaurants.
Closed Wednesdays. It fills at the weekend, and bookings are taken online.
The brook in the song The Spring Brook runs under this district. It is a Ministry of Education song from 1912, and its lyricist, Takano Tatsuyuki, was living at the time in Yoyohata village — what is now Yoyogi 3-chōme. The stream he wrote about is taken to be the Kōhone, which ran near his house. The Kōhone fed into the Udagawa, and the Udagawa became the Shibuya river and ran down to Tokyo Bay. The Kōhone was covered over around the 1964 Olympics and turned into a sewer. The one place you can still find it is a song stele beside the railway tracks near Yoyogi-Hachiman station.
What disappeared was the surface of the water, not the river. Shibuya is a valley, and the Udagawa still runs beneath Center-gai. The reason there is no underground passage linking the A and B buildings of the Seibu department store is that the culvert runs between them. The Shibuya river went the same way between about 1960 and 1970, put underground from the plaza at the east exit upstream, tributaries and all; above the Miyashita Park intersection it stopped being classed as a river at all and became sewerage. The shape of the streets is still the shape of the water.
The landform is the part you cannot put a lid on. Build a town in the bottom of a valley and the rain still gathers at the same low point. On 31 August 2020 a tank came into use twenty-five metres beneath the east plaza, able to hold four thousand cubic metres of stormwater — a void forty-five metres north to south and twenty-two east to west. Sixty years after the rivers went under, this district is still being redesigned around the fact that water collects here. The brook in the song is running where it always ran. People are only walking on top of it.
This narrow alley running parallel to the main Shibuya shopping streets traces its roots to a postwar black market over 70 years ago and packs in around 40 wood-framed bars and restaurants, most of them seating fewer than ten people. The alley survived the redevelopment of the entire neighborhood and remains the most authentic slice of old Shibuya — fairy lights, sliding doors, and all.

Konno Hachimangu
The largest festival in Shibuya. On the closing Sunday the mikoshi of fifteen neighbourhood associations gather for a joint procession. The flow of people that usually crosses the scramble is replaced for a day by portable shrines.

Shibuya Hikawa Shrine
Held to be the oldest shrine in Shibuya ward, and the tutelary shrine for the ground from Shibuya down to Ebisu. It falls at almost the same time as the Konno Hachimangu festival, so September in Shibuya has two festivals overlapping.

Shibuya is one of the city's largest interchanges: the JR Yamanote, Saikyo and Shonan-Shinjuku lines, the Keio Inokashira line, the Ginza, Hanzomon and Fukutoshin subway lines, and the Tokyu Toyoko and Den-en-toshi lines. The Narita Express runs direct from Narita in about 90 minutes. From Haneda it is about 40 minutes with a change onto the Keikyu line. IC cards work on all of it.
Shibuya is compelling year-round but each season offers something distinct. Spring (late March to early April) brings cherry blossom viewing parties in nearby Yoyogi Park. Summer evenings crackle with festival energy and outdoor bar seating. Autumn (October to November) sees the area dressed in warm foliage colors and arguably has the best weather for walking. The Halloween gathering in late October has become a massive unofficial street festival drawing tens of thousands. Winter illuminations from November through December transform the main avenues.
Shibuya Station is still under redevelopment and its layout can lose even people used to Tokyo's railways. Take the wrong exit and you come out somewhere else entirely, so it is safest to navigate from the Hachiko exit. Reception is often poor underground; use the signs in the station. Since October 2024, drinking in the street, in parks and in other public places around Shibuya Station has been prohibited year-round, between six in the evening and five the next morning. It is not a measure limited to Halloween or the New Year.
No account has been settled. Some say it comes from Shioya, a name used when the area was an inlet; others from the rust-coloured water of the river, shibu being that colour; others from the shape of the valley itself; others from the Shibuya family who held land here.
